been deeply disheartened at times by the hateful divisiveness in our nation.\u00a0 It seems that very damaging assumptions are often made about those who hold different viewpoints from one another.\u00a0 Indeed, those with a different perspective are often demonized.\u00a0 It seems many have shunned opportunities to show humility, kindness, and compassion.\u00a0 Indeed, the loudest voices seem to be those with spiteful spirits that reflect just how far some have lost their way.\u00a0 Instead of empathy, I have too often witnessed (and been on the receiving end of) judgment and shaming.\u00a0 Instead of a helping hand where it was most needed, there has been ridicule, mocking, and just plain cruelty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3906 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/columbiapsychology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Running-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is much that could be said about all that, but this message today is about looking up.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\">\u201c<a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-O08IBSfZ5w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By the Grace of God we\u2019ll see each other\u2019s hearts\u201d (For King and Country, \u201cRelate\u201d*).<\/a>\u00a0<\/span> That is not to say that it isn\u2019t important to learn from this unprecedented polarization we see in our nation.\u00a0 In fact, reflecting on the consequences of division sometimes renews our clarion call to unity.\u00a0 And I hope it does.\u00a0 The wisdom that comes from pain is one way in which \u201cweeping may stay for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning\u201d (Psalm 30:5).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3905\" src=\"https:\/\/columbiapsychology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/running-girl-smile-leaves-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" #000000;\">After all, how do we want to reflect at the end of 2022, whatever it may bring?\u00a0 Do we want to know that we did everything in our power to choose a loving word or a kind action?\u00a0 That we did not miss, but in fact even looked for, opportunities to make someone else\u2019s day a bit brighter?\u00a0 I want to be able to look back and know that I at least tried my best to be on the loving side to the degree that it was possible with me.\u00a0 I want to know that I strived for faith, hope, love, wisdom, compassion, unity, peace, and health.\u00a0 \u201cThe greatest of these is love\u201d (1<sup>st<\/sup> Corinthians 13:13).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Where there was hatred, let it be known that there was also love.\u00a0 Where there was selfishness, let it be known that there were acts of great heroism, and more importantly, great heroes.\u00a0 Where there was death, there was a resurrected awareness of the value of life.\u00a0 Among sadness, moments of new appreciation.\u00a0 In a sea of suffering, wisdom and truth shone bright in a lighthouse not as distant as we once thought.\u00a0 Unity spoke loudly above voices of judgment, and love always wins (1st Corinthians 13:8).\u00a0 There was laughter and music and kindness, and the moments, though coinciding with a sadness at times, were more poignant and meaningful than ever before.\u00a0 Moments of unexpected kindness feel suspended in time, like a photograph I will one day review with gratitude.\u00a0 Are some people kinder now than ever?\u00a0 Or do we just notice and appreciate kindness more than ever?\u00a0 I think it is a little of both.\u00a0 Regardless, we only notice kindness if we are giving it and open to receiving it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\"
